How Long Do Shipping Containers Last?

Shipping containers are extremely durable; they are made of strong Corten steel and built to withstand severe weather and rough conditions during transit. They are also designed to keep contents of all kinds secure against pests, vermin and intruders.

Their incredible durability has made them popular as building materials and alternative solutions for shipping container buildings such as residential homes, additional office space, storage, even swimming pools. One of the most common questions people ask when considering purchasing a shipping container or containers is: how long do they really last?

Generally speaking, new shipping containers can last 10 to 25 years with proper maintenance. Shipping container homes can withstand high winds and extreme weather conditions better than traditional wooden structures. They are also resistant to pests like termites that can cause traditional homeowners expensive damage.

Ultimately, the lasting power of your container will depend on the type of container you purchase, the conditions it is exposed to, and how well it is maintained. This is our guide to choosing either a 20- or 40-foot container that will last, and keeping it in good condition for as long as possible.

How to tell if a shipping container is in good condition

The average lifespan of your shipping container will depend on what kind of condition it is in when you purchase it. Of course, if you buy a brand new container, you can expect the container to be pristine. However, if you want to save some money, you can buy a used container in great condition that will suit your needs and still last many years with proper maintenance.

So, how can you tell if a container is in good condition? Shipping containers are categorised in a number of ways. For example, some come in conditions labelled A-through-D, but you’ll also see some marked “one-trip,” “single haul” “cargo-worthy,” “as-is,” or other descriptors.

At Gateway Containers, we believe in transparency for our customers, so we classify our containers to give you an accurate representation of your container’s condition. The majority of our containers are classed as “New, A-Grade, or Cargo-Worthy”.

New – Factory direct from Asia, your new container may be shipped to Australia containing cargo, in order to reduce shipping costs. These new units are often referred to as “one-way” or “one trip” containers. These containers can be converted into office space, temporary accommodations, or a permanent residence. New containers generally have minimal dents and marks or signs of usage.

A Grade – Previously used, but in good condition and suitable for furniture or archive storage. Average age of containers would be 16-18 years. A-grade containers can have minor-to-medium cosmetic flaws like dents and scratches or superficial rust on the exterior. Floors should be in good condition and interior walls reasonably unblemished.

Cargo Worthy – These recycled shipping containers are fresh out of service from shipping lines, and will be in a wind and watertight, vermin proof and a structurally-sound condition. These containers can be certified upon request (charges apply) for international shipment, or for local rail use. Cargo Worthy units are secure (can be fitted with a lock box for added peace of mind) and are a good choice when practicality and budget override presentation.

The right container for you will depend on the purpose you intend to use it for. If you’re unsure what condition or type of container you need, the experts at Gateway Containers can help you.

Signs that a container is in good condition

Aside from the grade and label of the container, there are some signs you can look for to indicate that a container is in good condition. Good containers won’t have excessive rust. Metal shipping containers in good condition may have some rust spots on the exterior, but not extensive enough to be problematic.

Examine the corners and doorways to ensure that edges are straight (without warping) and free from any cracks or dents. Make sure any container doors and locks still function properly. To be sure the door closes evenly, go inside the container and shut the door; if no light comes through, your door is flush.

One of the best ways to ensure your container is in good condition is to buy from a supplier you can trust. You can rely on Gateway Containers to communicate clearly what ‘good condition’ really means, and to provide an informed assessment about the quality of your container.

We do the work of inspecting and verifying your container for you, and can also tell you whether a container is watertight and airtight.

Signs your container needs maintenance

To keep your container in good shape longer, inspect your container regularly and check for signs of damage. If your container shows signs of wear and tear, it may require maintenance or repair.

Moisture – and resulting rust – is your container’s number-one enemy. Rust spots can be removed before it becomes a serious problem and spreads all the way through the steel walls. If rust has caused damage, the affected area may need to be repaired with a replacement panel of steel.

Shipping container experts like Gateway can check and fully refurbish your containers so that they are free from odours or any chemical residue. The ventilation or heating/cooling system of the container may be repaired if the container has developed a new smell or an increase in humidity.

You may also want to check on the container doors. When it becomes difficult for the doors to open or close, it may be a sign that the joints need to be lubricated.

How to improve your shipping container’s lifespan

You can extend the life of your storage container, container home, or office by taking a few preventative measures and performing light ongoing maintenance.

While shipping containers are extremely durable, moisture is one of the biggest threats to their longevity. So, minimising your container’s exposure to moisture and the onset of rust, is one of the best ways to keep it in good condition for years to come.

Paint

A good coat of paint is one of the best ways to weatherproof and protect your container from moisture. Gateway’s painting services will improve your container’s appearance and help it last longer.

Gateway Containers offers five standard colours and the option for a ColorBond match at an additional fee.

Modifications

Container modifications don’t just make your shipping container more functional, they can also extend the life of your container. Proper ventilation, heating, and cooling will protect your container’s contents and help cut down on excess moisture that can lead to mould and rust.

Gateway can also outfit your container with properly fitted windows, doors, and other customisations to keep pests, water, and pollutants out of your container.

Storage location

If you are using your container for long term or short term storage, where you keep your container can have an effect on its lifespan. If your container is exposed to the elements and harsh conditions, your container will depreciate faster than if it is kept in a covered location.

Steel supports or platforms can help keep the container level and prevent moisture from building up underneath. If you’re using your container for a home office or residence, be sure to have a proper foundation.
