Modification of the Month: Accessible Storage Unit

Containers play a key role in commerce and shipping, allowing goods to be stored and transported worldwide. What many people don’t know is that these sturdy containers can be repurposed for a number of functions. Shipping containers can be converted for a wide variety of personal, industrial, and commercial purposes.

Many people are looking at modifying shipping containers as a way to solve their storage and space problems. Shipping containers are inexpensive, durable, and have low maintenance requirements. You can use them for almost anything, from building a home to creating a storage unit.

What is a modified shipping container?

What exactly is a modified shipping container? Put simply – it’s a container that has been altered to suit your needs. This can entail changing the interior, changing the exterior or adding helpful features, such as ventilation or shelving.

Shipping containers are so versatile that they can create anything from an office building to a house. For instance, a granny flat can be an easy addition to any home with quality shipping containers and a team of experts.

However, shipping container accommodation is not the only reason people are looking into custom shipping containers.

At Gateway Containers, we have seen many creative ways our customers have styled their specialised shipping container modification. We also carry out many modifications and customisations ourselves. We work with a variety of construction materials and can always offer our customers an accurate price when quoted.

Modification of the month

This month we’re featuring a 40ft used A-grade High Cube Shipping Container conversion. Our shipping container modification experts converted this ordinary shipping container into an easily accessible storage unit. The container was custom painted to match the customer’s company colours.

The modifications completed on this 12-year-old container included fabricating and installing three sets of double container doors on the left-hand wall. The customer needed the doors to be the widest and tallest they could possibly be to ensure the easiest access to the container.

Can you modify a shipping container yourself?

While it may take some time, modifying a shipping container is achievable for those who have the right skills, and correct tools and equipment.

Whether you are considering converting a shipping container to a pop-up shop, coffee shop, retail space, sales office, secure storage facility, accommodation units, or just some extra space, a shipping container will need to undergo some modification and extra detailing to get to your final result.

The construction stage might appear to create a more affordable finished product, however, cheaper does not always equal better.

Despite this, shipping container modification is not the most straightforward thing, so it’s best to do your research. We recommend reaching out to professionals, like Gateway, from the outset.

How to modify a shipping container the right way?

Not only do we have a huge range of shipping containers, but our team of talented conversion specialists also know their way around the construction industry design requirements, forms, and relevant government departments to make sure you’re all set from the beginning.

At Gateway Containers, you benefit from the combined experience of both shipping container experts and modification experts. While some businesses may focus on sales or modifications, we work on both.

Do you need planning permission to convert a shipping container?

The short answer is: yes. Almost every building project will need approval from your local council. Depending on the intended use of your finished product, you will most likely need planning permission for every part of your shipping container that you wish to modify.

This includes any plumbing, electrical upgrades and changes that involve cutting or drilling holes in the original container structure. However, the good news is that here at Gateway Containers, we can help you navigate the process.
